The Chicago Blackhawks visit the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri, where they will take on the St. Louis Blues. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 pm central time. The Blackhawks are coming off of an impressive win against the Ottawa Senators. They came from behind in the game. Alex DeBrincat began the scoring by simply taking the puck up the ice, got into position, and quickly shoveled the puck past Thomas Chabot from quite a distance and got it past the goaltender. Zack Smith evened it up, credited on a blue line shot with a screen.
Then, with 9:30 left, Jonathon Toews took the puck from his own boards, glided up the ice, and got to the goaltender, putting a shot near post, stick side. Matt Duchene and Ryan Dzingle then assisted on a Maxime Lajole goal. After a couple more goals, the game ended in overtime when Patrick Kane took a pass up ice and scored the winner.
In the Blues’ season opener, it was all Jets. In fact, St. Louis didn’t find the back of the net until there was 5:50 left in the third period. Patrik Laine scored a power-play goal in the first period, but then the game went scoreless. Then, in the third period, four different Jets (Adam Lowry, Blake Wheeler, Kyle Connor, and Brandon Tanev) scored, effectively sealing the game. The game finished with a lopsided 5-1 score. Considering each team only played one game each, it is tough to use stats to make a comparison. However, each team faced the power play in their first games. The Blackhawks killed 2/3 of the power plays, while the Blues killed only half of theirs.
Both teams played against strong contenders, and the Blackhawks scored 4 goals, while the Blues put up only one after surrendering a 5-0 deficit. The Blackhawks looked somewhat close to their old selves while they were winning the Stanley Cup. On the other side of things, the Blues are an extremely talented team, but they will need to play better to beat the Blackhawks. It isn’t unreasonable to expect their roster to have a good performance.

The Blues are widely considered to be the better team between these two. However, the Chicago core is full of playoff experience, and it could be possible to see a bounce-back year from Patrick Kane, Jonathon Toews, Brent Seabrook, Duncan Keith, or Brandon Saad. If this happens to be the case for two or more of them, we could see another special Blackhawks team.
Odds are, however, that they will lose this game and finish near the bottom of the division this season. The Blues should win this game, as Chicago is sticking with backup goaltenders as they await Corey Crawford. Look for a decently high scoring game, perhaps 3-2 or 4-3.
