Pitching Matchup

Justin Verlander will be on the mound for the Astros. According to MLB.com: “Verlander, who picked up career win No. 200 Sunday in Oakland, has been terrific on the road, going 10-2 with a 2.09 ERA in 12 starts. That includes two starts against the Angels in which he’s thrown 15 scoreless innings with 18 strikeouts.”. Verlander is 12-8 on the year, and has been one of the more effective arms in the league. His ERA is 2.65, and he has struck out 223 hitters. As a pitcher who has been dominant for as long as Verlander has, fans must wonder how much longer he can compete at such a high level. However, there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight for the 6’5 right hander.

For the Angels, Jaime Berria will be pitching. MLB.com had this to say about his state: “Barria has had a nice rookie season while stepping into the Angels’ rotation, and he is now on his best run. He has won his last two starts, giving up two runs over 10 innings. He has 17 strikeouts in 15 2/3 innings over his last three outings.”. His last win on August 8th, over the Tigers, put him over the .500 mark, as he is now 8-7. His ERA currently sits at 3.41, a mark that he will look to improve on in this game.

Houston Astros

Like most of the season, Jose Altuve is the most consistent hitter on the team. He leads in average, with a .329 mark. He also gets on base 39% of the time. In terms of power, Alex Bregman has been the man in this lineup. He has driven in 78 runs, as compared to Altuve’s 48. Bregman has also hit 24 home runs, leading the team in that category as well. Yuri Gurriel will also be a man to watch in this game, as he is hitting .282 and has driven in 62 runs.

Los Angeles Angels

Unsurprisingly, Mike Trout is still hitting the cover off of the ball, as he has since his career began. He posts a great .312 number for his batting average. He also leads the team in home runs, with 30. Trout also reaches base a ridiculous 46.2% of the time. Andrelton Simmons is the only close to hitting the ball as consistently, with his .295 average. Guys like Justin Upton (Who leads the team in runs batted in), Albert Pujols, and Kole Calhoun could make a difference as well

Astros Top Angels

The Angels have been in a free fall this season. Although they are a talented team with a lot of great hitting, if they remain mediocre for a couple more seasons, we could see a White Sox-like rebuild in Anaheim. In this game, the Astros hit better, and they have Justin Verlander. Bet on the Houston Astros at -190.
