It is truly hard to believe how much time has passed since the Giants were still a competitive team. Six weeks ago they were a legitimate threat in the Wild Card race, and so they decided not to sell at the deadline. They are now five games under .500 as we come into the final stretch of Bruce Bochy’s long managerial career. And now, the question: Why did he not just retire in an even year? He has never managed well in odd years.
The Cardinals, on the other hand, are continuing to get their job done, looking to get into the playoffs. After a few years of failing to qualify, it seems the team is on its way to qualifying for the 2019 postseason. It seems that at this point they are the favorites in the NL Central, but the Cubs will not go down without a fight. When the two teams next meet, a lot will be on the line.
The moneyline on the Giants is set at +245, while it is -290 for the Cardinals. The over/under is set at 8.5 runs.
Giants Look To Close Strong
This is a team that has not scored enough runs this year, and it has plagued them. The injury to Pablo Sandoval also took away their (shockingly) most consistent batter in the lineup. They DFA’d Joe Panik last month after a long tenure as the second baseman, and things have been rough.
On the bright side, Kevin Pillar has had a career year with 20 home runs and 75 RBI. On the flip side, this is a year with an excess of home runs in baseball, and only one Giants player has 20. Every player in the starting lineup is 28 or older.
Dereck Rodriguez is set to make his 14th start (23rd appearance) of the year. He has posted a 5-7 record with a 5.49 ERA in 80 1/3 innings of work. Rodriguez has 51 strikeouts to 29 walks.
Moving On Up
One of the hottest teams in the NL right now, the Cardinals have been playing some great baseball of late. Marcell Ozuna and Paul Goldschmidt have continued to hit the ball well for the Cardinals, playing a big role in the team’s streak. There are enough hitters in this lineup that it seems like it will continue to be the case.
With the September call-ups, they will have an opportunity to examine their young talent and look to implement some of these players for next season.
Jack Flaherty is set to make his 28th start of the season for the Cardinals tonight. He has posted an 8-7 record with a 3.31 ERA in 152 1/3 innings of work. He has struck out 178 batters while walking 47.
