Tuff Fish Petition: Sandstrom’s Online Poker Petition In California

Anthony “Tuff Fish” Sandstrom, professional poker player and supporter of legalizing online poker in the United States, started up a petition on July 27, 2007, to initiate a state-run online poker site for residents of California.

Sandstrom was given approval for the petition by the Secretary of State, certifying that the petition, should it gain 430,000 signatures from California residents before Christmas, will provide voters with the option of approving a state-run online poker site on the voting ballots come February, 2008.

The petition has received some criticism from industry experts, as well as opposition from California’s land-based gaming industry. Casinos across the state are not exactly eager to compete with stay-at-home poker gaming. The California State Lottery has failed to express an over-joyed opinion of the proposed competition as well.

Should Sandstrom succeed in fetching the required signatures, and should the voting public of California approve the legalization of a state-run online poker room, the state itself would stand to benefit entirely from any profits derived from the venture. The revenue would be split accordingly; 80% allocated to city roadwork, 10% to unincorporated county roadwork, and 10% to the prevention and assistance of problem gambling.
