After going through a 16-game stretch with just a single loss, the Mets have come back to Earth a bit with back-to-back losses against NL East foes. They still have plenty of opportunities to qualify for a Wild Card spot in the crowded NL race, so they cannot allow a few losses here and there to get them down. This is a resilient bunch that does not seem to want to quit. Four years ago, they had a miraculous late-season run that ended in a World Series trip. You never know.
The Braves improved to 21 games over .500 with their win against the Mets Tuesday night, as they try to distance themselves from the Nationals. As good as the Mets have been over the last few weeks, DC has been hot for two months and sits just six games behind Atlanta, not too far behind to give up in the chase to potentially be a division champion. Anything can happen.
The moneyline on the Mets is +124, while it is -142 for the Braves. The over/under is set at 10.5 runs.
Mets Looking For More Magic
After losing back-to-back games for the first time in three weeks, New York looks to come back after their first reality check. While they won’t have Robinson Cano available for the rest of the season, and Jeff McNeil left Tuesday’s game with an injury, the guys on the field have continued to get it done. Pete Alonso’s rookie power numbers are off the charts compared to what we expect these days. He has hit 38 home runs and driven in 85, scoring 72 times. Michael Conforto has launched 25 home runs while driving in 67. McNeil and his .332 average will be missed if he is out.
Steven Matz will make his 22nd start of the season for the Mets (24th appearance). The 28-year-old has posted a 7-7 record with a 4.49 ERA in 110 1/3 innings of work, striking out 104 batters while walking 34.
Braves Go For Win No. 72
It is unlikely that in the late part of the season we see the Braves take over as the top seed in the NL with the Dodgers a bit far ahead of them. But they possess so many dynamic hitters in this lineup, powered by Ronald Acuna Jr. He has crushed 34 home runs and brought in 81 (147 hits) while stealing 28 bases (34 SBA) in a league where it’s less common. Ozzie Albies and Freddie Freeman have both been tremendous, with Freeman just four RBI away from 100, and we’re only halfway through August.
Dallas Keuchel will make his 11th start since coming to the Braves. He has posted a 3-5 record with a 4.83 ERA in 59 2/3 innings of work. He has struck out 46 batters while walking 20.
Mets Take One In Atlanta
After dropping the series opener, the Mets will bounce back with a win. Matz will go six strong, and Alonso and Ramos will power them to the win.
