Monday Night Baseball: Washington Nationals @ St. Louis Cardinals

The Washington Nationals visit Busch Stadium in St. Louis on Monday night, where they will face off against the Cardinals.  The Nationals are sitting at a record of 60-58, good enough for third place in the National League East division. They are five and a half games behind the Atlanta Braves.  In between them are the Philadelphia Phillies, who are tied for first with 65-52. Meanwhile, St. Louis sits at 63-55, which puts them in third place in the National League Central division.  They are five and a half games behind the division leading Chicago Cubs. They are also behind the Milwaukee Brewers, who sit at 67-54, and in second place. This will be a face off of two teams who are fighting for position in their respective divisions.  St. Louis is favored in this matchup: at -147.

Pitching Matchup

Tommy Milone will be on the mound for Washington in this game.  MLB.com had this to say about the lefty: “After a pair of successful starts filling in for the injured Stephen Strasburg, Milone was hit hard in his most recent outing when he gave up seven runs on 10 hits against the Braves.”  He will look to improve on his recent outing against the division leading Atlanta in this game as Washington tries to claw their way into contention. His record stands at 1-1, and his ERA is 5.50.

For the Cardinals, Miles Mikolas will toe the rubber.  In his past 23 starts, 16 of them have been quality starts.  He has been tossing the ball really well this season, as his record is 12-3.  Also, his ERA is 2.74.

Washington Nationals

Looking at the offensive stat sheet for Washington, there are some very good numbers.  Anthony Rendon leads the way in terms of average, with a .289 mark.  However, in terms of power, Bryce Harper is the best.  He has driven in 71 runs, and has hit 28 home runs.  Harper also gets on base in 38% of his at bats. Rendon has also hit with some power, having driven in 58 runs.  He has also added some home runs, having hit 16. Look for one of these two to play a big role in deciding this game.

St. Louis Cardinals

Jose Martinez is leading the Cardinals in batting average.  He is hitting .299 overall this year, and has driven in 69 runs.  Matt Carpenter is leading in home runs, with 32.  He is also hitting a decent average, with .277.  Marcell Ozuna should also be a factor in this game, as he is hitting .272.  These three will be very important in this game.

Nationals Top Cardinals

Miles Mikolas is playing very well for St. Louis lately, but I would bet that Bryce Harper should be able to hit him.  I think that he will have a good night, driving in a few runs en route to a much needed victory for him and Tommy Milone.  Bet on the Washington Nationals at +125.
