MLB Thursday Night Tilt: Baltimore Orioles at Toronto Blue Jays

The Baltimore Orioles visit the Rogers Centre on Thursday night to take on the Toronto Blue Jays.  First pitch will be at 6:07 central. These teams are both at the bottom of the same division. Baltimore is 19-41, putting them in dead last in the American League East division.  Toronto is 26-35, putting them in 4th place, 16 and a half games behind the red hot Red Sox.

Righty David Hess will be in the mound for Baltimore, while lefty Jaime Garcia will get the nod for Toronto.  Hess is 2-2 on the year, and has earned a 3.47 ERA, indicating an average year.  Garcia is 2-4, with a 6.08 ERA. Garcia will look to make up some ground in both of those stats, as he can’t be pleased with those numbers.  Toronto is favored in this matchup: at -155.

Baltimore Orioles

The Orioles have had several players producing this year, but there’s been no bigger contributor than Manny Machado.  Machado is having a monster year, hitting .323.  He has also driven in an enormous 49 runs, and it isn’t even the all Star break yet.  This puts him on pace for 132 at the end of the year, which would put him in an elite category.  He also has 18 home runs, and gets on base nearly 40% of the time.

Veteran Adam Jones is also providing a lift for the struggling Orioles.  He is hitting .288 on the year, and has 28 RBIs. Baltimore will need him and Machado both to be hitting the ball well for them to win this one.  Danny Valencia has also driven in 14 runs.

Toronto Blue Jays

Looking at the lineup for Toronto, there are no standout hitters in terms of average.  In fact, Dwight Smith Jr. is the only hitter batting .300 or above, and he is at exactly .300.  He also has exactly 4 RBIs and one home run to go with that number. Most of the runs provided for Toronto have come from guys who haven’t hit the ball well in terms of average.  For example, Yangervis Solarte is batting only .251, yet he heads the team in RBIs, with 36.  Justin Smoak is batting only .253, but has driven in 33.  These numbers spell inconsistency. Inconsistency is a word that should scare sports bettors, because it blurs the line of who should be favored in a particular matchup.

Orioles Surprise Blue Jays

While the Blue Jays look like the obvious choice based on record, their consistency leaves a lot to be desired.  Hardly anyone on Toronto’s squad is hitting the ball consistently, so it is hard to say with any degree of confidence that they will do so on Thursday.  Meanwhile, the Orioles look like a horrible team in terms of record, yet they have two consistent contributors at the dish. In the world of sports betting, consistency should be the name of the game.  Take the underdog Orioles at +130.
