MLB Betting Preview: St. Louis Cardinals at Philadelphia Phillies

The St. Louis Cardinals visit Citizen’s Bank Park in Philadelphia where they will face off against the Philadelphia Phillies. First pitch is at 6:05 pm central. St. Louis is 37-33, putting them in 3rd place in the National League Central division. They are 4 games out, behind the Brewers and Cubs, who are tied. Meanwhile, the Phillies are 38-32, good enough for second place in the National League East division. They are 3 and a half games behind Atlanta. Both teams will be looking to climb back into contention in their divisions.

This will be a battle of two pitchers who have been struggling this season. Luke Weaver will be on the hill for St. Louis. Weaver is 3-6 so far this year. He also has a 4.52 ERA. He will need to work to bring his ERA down in this game. For Philadelphia, Vince Velasquez will get the starting nod. He is 5-7 this year, and has a 4.74 ERA.

St. Louis Cardinals

Offensively, St. Louis is led by righty first baseman Jose Martinez. He is hitting .314 so far this season. He has also driven in 42 runs and has 10 home runs. His hitting could prove to be a determining factor in this game. Another player to watch is Marcell Ozuna. He has been hitting .288, while driving in 40. These two have been the main run producers for the Cardinals, as they are the only two who have driven in 30 runs or more, with the closest being Matt Carpenter at 27. Look for St. Louis to rely heavily on the hitting if these two men.

Philadelphia Phillies

The run production for Philadelphia has been a lot more balanced. 5 man have driven in 30 or more. The leader in run production is Odubel Herrera, who has been the man for this organization from game one of the season. He has driven in 39 runs. He also has a good average, at .293. Tied with him in terms of batting runs in is Rhys Hoskins. He is also hitting .248, so he could be more consistent but is producing runs nonetheless. The switch-hitting Carlos Santana is next, having driven in 38 runs, but is only hitting .226. Overall, the Phillies have lots of run producers, but their average is lacking. Still, they should be able to score enough to win this game.

Phillies Top Cardinals

This is a close one, but the fact is that St. Louis relies so heavily on two guys in their lineup to produce all of their runs, and Philadelphia’s scoring is more spread out. There is a greater chance that one or two of five guys is hitting well than two out of two. Although anything can happen in baseball, numbers don’t lie. Barring a great performance from either starting pitcher, the Phillies should walk away from this one victorious. Bet on the Philadelphia Phillies at -118.
