Pittsburgh Looking to Bounce Back

Trevor Williams started for Pittsburgh and was solid but left early due to an injury. He went 3 2/3 innings allowing just 1 run on 2 hits and a walk and struck out 5. The bullpen was solid with the exception of Richard Rodriguez who gave up 3 runs on 3 hits and a walk in his lone inning of work. Gregory Polanco was 1 for 4 with a solo bomb in the 7th inning. Elias Diaz and Kevin Newman were both 2 for 4 with a run scored. Adam Frazier and Bryan Reynolds each recorded a hit.

Jordan Lyles will be on the hill for the Pirates in this one. He is 3-1 with a 2.09 ERA in 7 starts this season with a WHIP of 1.09 and 35 strikeouts in 38 2/3 innings. Last season he went 3-4 with a 4.11 ERA in 8 starts and 27 appearances out of the bullpen. The Pirates have not seen much of the lefty Lucchesi as this is just his 2nd year in the big leagues. They are 0 for 8 with 3 strikeouts but have drawn 3 walks. Josh Bell is 0 for 1 with a walk and Gregory Polanco is 0 for 0 with the other 2 walks.

Padres Seek to Keep Wins Coming

Eric Lauer had a great game for San Diego. He went 5 2/3 innings allowing just 2 runs, 1 earned, on 7 hits and no walks while striking out 3. The bullpen allowed just 1 run over the final 3 1/3 innings. The Padres only had 5 hits in the game and Ian Kinsler had the big blast, a 2 out 3-run go-ahead home run in the 6th inning which was his lone hit of the game. Franmil Reyes was 1 for 3 and hit his 13th home run of the season. Eric Hosmer and Manny Machado both went 1 for 3 and Austin Hedges went 1 for 2.

Joey Lucchesi will get the start for the Padres on Friday. Lucchesi is 3-1 with a 4.57 ERA in 8 starts with a 1.35 WHIP and 40 strikeouts over 41 1/3 innings. In his rookie campaign last season, he went 8-9 with a 4.08 ERA in 26 starts. The Padres have seen a little bit of Jordan Lyles during his time in Colorado. They have 40 at-bats but have only managed 9 hits and 6 walks. Ian Kinsler is 5 for 13 with a double and triple and has earned 4 walks. Manny Machado is 2 for 4 and Wil Myers is 1 for 9 with 2 walks. Eric Hosmer is 1 for 6 and 5 guys are hitless against the righty.

Padres Top Pirates

The Padres are -165. Jordan Lyles has had a solid season while Lucchesi has struggled at times. However, Lucchesi has found his stride of late and has had 2 quality starts in a row. The Padres bats have been better than Pittsburgh’s and the Padres have a distinct advantage in the bullpens. I think San Diego will do just enough against Lyles and Lucchesi will keep them close until the game goes to the bullpens where San Diego will make its move again. Take the Padres -165.
