Free Pick and Prediction: St. Louis Cardinals at San Diego Padres

The surging St. Louis Cardinals visit the San Diego Padres on Sunday afternoon.  The contest begins at 3:10 pm central. The Cardinals have won 7 out of their last ten games, giving them a record of 22-14.  Their record is good enough to put them in first place in the National League Central division. Meanwhile, San Diego has won only 4 out of their last ten, making them dead last in the National League West division.

Adam Wainwright takes to the mound for St. Louis.  Wainwright is 1-2 on the season, with a 3.45 ERA.  Clayton Richard will get the starting nod for San Diego.  He has a disappointing 1-5 record and a high 5.72 ERA.  St. Louis is favored in this matchup: at -125.

First Place Cardinals

St. Louis has been one of the surprise performers this season, having jumped off to the first place position.  Jedd Gyorko has had good stats for the Cardinals, despite a low number of at-bats.  Through his 41 at-bats, he has driven in 7 runs. He has also crossed the plate himself 10 times.   Perhaps his most impressive stat is his slugging percentage. He boasts a .707 slugging percentage so far this season.  St. Louis will be looking for more of the same from Gyorko for them to win.

Tommy Pham has been another big offensive performer for St. Louis.  Pham is hitting .343 through his 108 at-bats so far this year.  Pham has driven in 17 runs and crossed the plate 27 times on his own.  Much like Gyorko, Pham also boasts a high slugging percentage: a respectable .593.  Another impressive stat for Pham is the fact that he has walked 21 times.

Last Place Padres

The Padres will look to improve on a disappointing season so far.  Starter Clayton Richard will have to make some of the biggest improvements if the Padres are to win.  Neither Richard’s record nor his ERA are turning any heads this year. He will have to get ahead in the count with as many hitters as possible but not their the ball too high in the zone, as St. Louis has been hitting the ball well.

Offensively, nobody has really been hitting the ball very consistently.  With the injury to A.J. Ellis, Travis Jankowski was called upon as a replacement.  In his short stint thus far, Jankowski has hit .368 with one RBI on one solo home run.  Overall, this has been encouraging for him, so look for him to build on his momentum this game.  While the case can be made that he will hit the ball well, not too many other players have been hitting well.  Somebody else will have to step up at the dish if San Diego is going to have a chance.

Cardinals Top Padres

Anything can happen in sports, however, the likelihood of San Diego winning this game isn’t high.  I would definitely hedge my bets toward a big game from Tommy Pham, Jedd Gyorko, or a host of other hot-hitting Cardinal bats.  Take St. Louis at -125.
