The latest state to see movement in regards to daily fantasy sports is none other than Alabama. The state House has passed a measure that will see paid-entry fantasy sports legalized and regulated in the state, which includes daily fantasy sports as provided by such companies as FanDuel and DraftKings.
Daily fantasy sports operators have stopped offering services in Alabama due to the attorney general of the state asking operators to remove services in 2016. Efforts to see DFS legislation passed were made in 2016 but to no avail. For 2017, the latest bill was able to earn House approval with a vote of 43 to 38.
According to Legal Sports Report, a procedural move kept the bill from coming up for a vote initially. The House first declared that the bill would not be up for full debate or an up and down vote. The House moved on to another bill but then a problem with the voting machine in the House chamber led to the bill being up for consideration once again.
Concerning the DFS bill, the debate would last for close to two hours with speeches and questioning taking place among the House members. The main topic of debate was if daily fantasy sports is considered gambling. This is not surprising as the state of Alabama is highly conservative when it comes to gambling and offers very little by way of gambling options for residents with no state lottery and very few gaming venues.
The bill will now be heading to the Senate and it is unknown as to if the measure will have support or will even be considered. When looking at the close vote within the House, it would not be surprising to see the bill avoided or not enough support given to pass a vote within the Senate. Only time will tell if operators will be able to offer their services once again in the state, be it with this piece of legislation or another bill introduced in the future.
