This week, the state of Pennsylvania officially announced that daily fantasy sports are now legalized in the state. As part of a statewide gaming expansion, DFS operators can now register and legally operate in the state, offering contests to participants who are 18 years of age or older.
DFS legalization went into effect on Saturday, with six fantasy sports sites now registered to operate in the state, including FanDuel and DraftKings. The option to legalize DFS comes at a time when the state is rapidly expanding their gambling industry. A gaming package was passed into law late last year that allowed this change along with the legalization of online casino and poker gaming, the creation of satellite casinos, new lottery games and more.
According to Doug Harbach, a spokesman for the state’s Gaming Control Board, game participation will not change due to the official legalization. Players do not have to re-register to take part. However, operators will now be taxed on all contest revenues with 15% going to the state. The money will be placed within the Pennsylvania general fund.
The licensed daily fantasy sports operators will be regulated by the Gaming Control Board to ensure that the gaming environment is fair and that each operator is providing services within the state standards guidelines. Operators must verify player identity, provide information on rules and prizes before games are played and limit any beginner contests to actual beginners. Channels must also be established to respond to complaints by players.

Players that participate in daily fantasy sports contests in the state via a brand other than the ones mentioned above will be considered to be taking part in illegal gaming. With the legislation, the state becomes the 19th in the US to regulate fantasy sports.
