On Friday night, the Cleveland Indians will go out West to take on the Oakland Athletics in the opener of a three-game set. The Indians are coming off a series split with the White Sox, while the A’s are coming off a 2-1 series win against the Reds. Cleveland is 20-16 on the year and Oakland is 17-22.
The Indians played just six innings on Thursday as their game was cut short due to rain but still came out victorious 5-0. Carlos Carrasco was dominant in his five innings of work, giving up just two hits and striking out 6. Jordan Luplow had his best game of the year, going 2 for 3 with two solo home runs. Francisco Lindor went 1 for 2 with an RBI double, and Jake Bauers went 1 for 1 with a double and scored twice. Jose Ramirez and Carlos Santana each recorded a single, and Roberto Perez went 2 for 2. Carlos Gonzalez had the final Cleveland hit, and the Indians drew six walks in the game.
Oakland was shut out on Thursday afternoon 3-0 following a no-hitter by Mike Fiers and then a walk-off home run on Wednesday. Chris Bassitt was solid in this one. He allowed the three runs on seven hits and a walk and struck out nine batters in 7 2/3 innings. The bullpen came in and gave the team 1 1/3 scoreless innings to keep them in it. The offense was just nonexistent in this one as Oakland only managed six hits. Matt Olsen went 2 for 4 with a double. Stephen Piscotty and Chad Pinder each had doubles as well. Marcus Semien and Ramon Laureano accounted for the other two Oakland hits.
Anderson To Start
Cody Anderson will be making just his second start of the season for the Indians. In his first start, he went just 2/3 of an inning and surrendered four runs on two hits and four walks. He had five innings of work out of the bullpen before his start and allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks. This is his first stint in the big leagues since 2016. The Indians only have five at-bats against the Athletics starter. Jason Kipnis is 1 for 2, and Jose Ramirez is 1 for 1, while Francisco Lindor and Roberto Perez are both 0 for 1.
Athletics Turn To Montas
Frankie Montas will be on the hill for the Athletics and is 4-2 with a 2.75 ERA and a WHIP of 1.22 with 35 strikeouts in 39 1/3 innings of work. Last season, he went 5-4 with a 3.88 ERA in 11 starts. Only two Athletics hitters have gone up against Cody Anderson in his career. Kendrys Morales is 2 for 3, while Khris Davis is 1 for 2.
Athletics Take Opener
The Athletics are -165. There isn’t much experience for either pitcher against his opponent, but the track records for this season have been completely different. Anderson has struggled mightily and didn’t even make it an inning in his first start. Montas has been solid all season long and will keep Oakland in the game. The Oakland bats will get to Anderson and chase him early once again en route to a 7-3 victory. Take the Athletics -165.
