Betting Preview: Sunday Night Baseball – San Fransisco Giants @ Chicago Cubs

The San Francisco Giants visit Wrigley Field to take on the Chicago Cubs on Sunday night.  The game begins at 7:08 pm central. San Francisco is 25-27 so far this year, a record that has them in 3rd place in the National League West division, 2 games behind the Colorado Rockies.  Meanwhile, the Cubs own a 26-22 record, but are all the way down in 4th in the National League Central. The Cubs are 4.5 games behind the division leading Brewers, but a win combined with Cardinal and Pirate losses could catapult them into second place.

Ty Blach will be on the mound for San Francisco.  He has a 3-4 record and a 4.37 ERA. He will look to even up his record during this one.  Tyler Chatwood will get the nod for the Cubs.  Chatwood is also 3-4, and has a 3.74 ERA.  The Cubs are favored at -215.

San Francisco Giants

The Giants have had a couple consistent performers this year.  One of them has been Brandon Belt.  Belt is hitting an admirable .316 so far this year.  He has batted in 31 runs as well. Perhaps his most impressive stats are the fact that he gets on base over 41% of the time and has walked 27 times.  When players get on base a lot, they score a lot of runs. Belt is the poster child for this fact, having crossed the plate 29 times. A guy like that can have an impact on any game in any number of ways, even if he isn’t hitting the ball well.

Brandon Crawford has also been getting good things done for the Giants.  Crawford is batting .312 with 23 RBIs and 6 homeruns.

Chicago Cubs

In terms of hitting the ball consistently, nobody has had a better year for the Cubs than Tommy La Stella.  La Stella is batting .333 through his 39 games.  He hasn’t got with much power, only amassing a pair of extra base hits and 0 homeruns, but look for him to get on base at least a couple times in this matchup.

While his average might not show it, Javier Baez has been lighting it up for the Cubs.  He has driven in 39 runs this year, making him arguably the clutchest hitter on the team.  He has also crushed 12 home runs. Look for La Stella and the rest of the Cubs to try to get on base so guys like Baez and Kris Bryant can drive them in.

Cubs Top Giants

The Cubs just have too much firepower in their lineup.  While the team as a whole doesn’t have the greatest looking stats in terms of average, they all seem to hit the ball with men on base.  I think Ty Blach will just be overmatched, be especially if the Cubs can get men on base early. Look for Blach to try to get ahead in the count as much as possible, but if he falls behind, the Cubs will run all over him.  Take the Cubs at -215.
