AL Wildcard: Oakland Athletics at New York Yankees

Back in the wild card game for the first time in a good few years, the A’s are looking to make some noise. They don’t have a starting pitcher to throw out there today however so they will be starting with their bullpen.

The Yankees pitching could not have been worse in this contest last year, but their offense helped dig them out of a huge hole against Minnesota. A Yankees win will give us a playoff series where they play the Red Sox. The Yankees are -180 over Oakland on Wednesday night.

Oakland Athletics

As a team this year, Oakland hit .252, which was very impressive. Led by the offensive prowess of Khris Davis (48 HR’s and 123 RBI’s), they crushed 227 home runs in their 162 games. Matt Chapman, Stephen Piscotty, Jed Lowrie, and Matt Olson all showed us how strong they were at points this year. Pitching has not been the strong suit for the Athletics, but has been good enough to get them to this point in time. They were never considered playoff contenders when the year began. A dominant mid-summer run vaulted them over the Mariners, and they never looked back.

Liam Hendriks, who was waived by the A’s at one point during the season, will take the mound for them. In 25 appearances (8 starts), he went 0-1, posting a 4.13 ERA in 24 innings. He struck out 22 batters while walking 10. He will likely not go past the second inning.

New York Yankees

You thought the A’s had a lot of power? The Yankees set the modern-era record for most home runs ever hit by a team in a season. 267 HR’s were hit by the Bronx Bombers in 2018. Led by Giancarlo Stanton’s 38, they just kept launching. Luke Voit has proved to be a huge X-Factor for the team since coming up, giving them the 1B they really needed. They are going to need a lot of hitting, and not just HR’s tonight. If they can get guys on base and not just do it with the solo shots, like T-Rex Pennebaker in the movie Mr. 3000, they will have a very good chance.

Luis Severino will take the mound for the Yankees. He got battered and bruised against the Twins in this game last year. He posted a 19-8 record with a 3.39 ERA in 191 1/3 innings of work. Severino struck out 220 batters while walking 46. He has allowed two runs or fewer in three straight starts since allowing five runs on six hits in less than three innings against the ATHLETICS.

Yankees win, Theeeeee Yankees win!

We’re taking the Yankees to advance to the ALDS to play against the Red Sox. The bullpen of the A’s cannot hold up forever, and not having a starter out there at the start will throw them off.

Tonight’s game will have more scoring than last night’s 2-1 pitching duel in Chicago, that is for sure.
