William Hill Sports Betting Kiosks Offline in Nevada

ptssportsWilliam Hill shut down all tavern sports betting kiosks at 12:01am this morning in response to a Nevada law that goes into effect on July 1st.  This law redefines what constitutes a restricted gaming establishment.

The new law further establishes the difference between a locals’ tavern, which carries a restricted license, and unrestricted casinos that offer full gaming and amenities.

Restricted gaming establishments will be required to offer patrons at least 2500 square feet of space and no more than 15 slot machines under the new Nevada law.  Restricted taverns will also be unable to offer sports betting through kiosks located on the property.

At least one locals’ tavern chain has found a solution.

Golden Gaming, through its subsidiary PT’s Pubs, has been advertising mobile sports betting to its patrons.  Players that are accustomed to wagering on kiosks located within its taverns may use their Golden Gaming player’s card to make wagers through William Hill’s mobile betting app.

The outcome of the new restricted gaming law is unclear, but at this point, it seems that sports bettors will be able to deposit in local taverns, but will be required to ultimately make their bets on personal mobile devices, as opposed to kiosks.  The effects of this law should become clear on July 1st.

The kiosks will remain on PT’s properties as the machines are also programmed to process player promotions.  This also leaves open the possibility that a court challenge may be filed in the coming days since these licensed machines were acquired from American Wagering for the sole purpose of accepting sports wagers, which were approved by the Nevada Gaming Control Board, before the Nevada Legislature banned sports betting in taverns.
