While the state of Pennsylvania recently held a meeting to discuss online gambling and regulation, one Philadelphia is planning on possibly adding mobile gaming to their land casino offerings. The Greenwood Gaming & Entertainment INC group is considering offering gambling options via tablets and smartphones at the Parx Casino which is located in Bensalem.
John Dixon, the Chief Technology Officer for Greenwood, met with the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board this past week and stated that the idea for mobile gaming at the casino is to expand the business to create more revenues for the casino as well as the state. The casino would be able to offer something that is appealing to a new generation of gamblers.
During the meeting with the board, the attorney for Greenwood Gaming, Alan C. Kohler of Eckert Seamans, stated that the company would like to file a petition within a three to six month time period from now. The petition would ask permission to introduce betcloud, a system for mobile gaming.
According to ThisWeekInGambling, Betcloud would allow players to use mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones only while in the casino. A Bluetooth system would be used and would disconnect as soon as the mobile device was outside the casino. This system would be directly connected to the computer network statewide to make sure the state earned revenues from the losses of each gambler.
The games available on the betcloud would be taxed at 55% which is the same rate for land based slot machine gaming in the state. The betcloud system is currently used on Norwegian Cruise Line shops and is about to be approved in Colorado by gambling regulators, according to WMG Gaming INC Chief Technology Officer, Steve Beason, the company that owns betcloud.
The casino would like to be able to appeal to younger players and the mobile option is just the way to do so. As the state is currently discussing online gambling options, it will be interesting to see if the betcloud service will be approved once the casino files a petition for approval. This may be the first step in getting online gambling options in the state of Pennsylvania.
