The Poker Players Alliance is a strong supporter of poker players within the United States and continually works to provide a safe and fair gaming environment for those of us who reside within the states. Just last week, it was announced that the Restoration of America’s Wire Act bill will go to a hearing at the beginning of March, which would essentially ban online gaming from taking place within the United States. The PPA is already working to try and lobby against this bill as it would be detrimental to the online poker industry already established as well as individual states trying to enter the industry.
It was announced last week that the House Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security, and Investigations would be meeting to discuss the RAWA bill on March 5th. According to PocketFives, the hearing has not been posted at the website of the Subcommittee and it is unknown as to who the witnesses will be. Speaking with PocketFives, Rich Muny, the Vice President of the Poker Players Alliance stated:
“Many people don’t realize just how close RAWA was to becoming law during the 2014 lame duck session.” Muny continued by stating that this is a real threat as Sheldon Adelson donates big money and donates often. The Las Vegas Sands CEO has been a driving support behind the measure and continues to push to see online gambling illegal within the US. The way to keep Adelson happy is to appease him by giving him what he wants which would be RAWA being made into law.
If the March hearing takes place, the discussion would be to prohibit online gambling which would see operations shut down in New Jersey, Nevada and Delaware if the measure is passed. This would also hurt states that are starting to create legislation this year for consideration of legalized gaming online for real money play.
The PPA plans on continuing to watch the movement of Adelson and the RAWA bill, by keeping track of which lawmakers are in support of the legislation. New opponents of the measure have shown their support recently such as Congressman Ron Paul, Americans for Tax Reform and more.
