John Pappas Requests Massachusetts Consider Online Poker Legislation

DE gamblingJust yesterday we reported that lottery officials in the state of Massachusetts would like to see legislation changed in the state to begin a study on online gambling. Current law does not allow online gambling of any kind, even free play. Lottery officials would like to begin testing the option but need lawmakers to make provisions so they can do so. John Pappas, the Executive Director of the Poker Players Alliance, has requested lawmakers in the state add online poker to the mix.

According to a recent report by Gambling911, Pappas sent a statement to the Joint Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure in the state to see if online poker would be included in SB 101. This is the bill which needs to be amended to allow for online lottery and gaming. Pappas would like to see online poker added as an option as well.

Pappas spoke to the committee about Nevada, Delaware and New Jersey and how they have such legislation for regulating online gaming options. Pappas also mentioned states that are watching the progress of the first three to begin the path as well, including: California, Illinois, Iowa and Florida.

The PPA Executive Director spoke of the economic benefits but also how a regulated market is a necessity as it can provide consumer protections that are needed. Pappas noted how operators in a regulated market are accountable to players, the regulators and law officials.

In the statement, Pappas said that in the US today, as well as in global regulated markets, internet gaming companies are required to employ only the best of breed technologies that can help protect minors and those who are problem gamblers. The technology is used to keep games fair as well as block players who are not located in the right jurisdictions. The safeguards are considered more restrictive than the options used in brick and mortar casinos in today’s land based gaming industry.

In conclusion, Pappas asked the committee to consider all benefits of online poker in the state. To provide a regulated and safe environment would be both socially and economically beneficial.
