Gambling Survey Shows At Least 10 States Looking at iGaming Legislation

Only three states passed legislation in 2013 to provide online gambling or poker capabilities to residents and visitors within their borders. A new study is now showing that an additional states are now interested in joining Nevada, Delaware and New Jersey in the US iGaming market.

Gambling Compliance recently conducted a survey on legislation us flagprospects for this year in regards to online gambling and while the company predicts that there will be a very low chance that federal legislation will pass, there are ten states interested in the prospect of gambling legislation.

According to the survey, as reported by CBS Denver, there are ten states that are considering new legislation for online gambling action. These states include:

  • California
  • Colorado
  • Hawaii
  • Illinois
  • Iowa
  • Louisiana
  • Massachusetts
  • Mississippi
  • New Jersey
  • Pennsylvania

The research director of the group, Chris Krafcik, commented on the study by stating that in 2013, there were ten states that considered legislation that would allow for casino style gambling online. This was a historic high and this year should be just as busy with interested states.

The state of California is considered the state with the largest potential for success as they have the largest population. Indian tribes in the state are currently trying to come to agreements on how online poker should be legalized. Meetings continue to take place and according to the report, a bill will most likely be proposed before the August deadline.

The state of Mississippi tried to pass legislation but the bill is now dead as it did not move through legislation this past Tuesday. Legislation is currently begin carried over from last year in Pennsylvania, Iowa, Hawaii and the before mentioned California.

Of the states that currently offer online gambling, there may able be changes. Nevada may consider offering full gaming instead of just online poker and New Jersey is looking into international options. The state of Delaware is predicted to be looking for agreements with other states to share player pools as they struggle to bring in player numbers and revenues.

Overall the landscape is changing and it will be interesting to watch as more states begin to introduce legislation for the regulation of online gambling and poker options.
