The European Poker Tour has been in Sochi, Russia, hosting quality poker tournament events, with the Main Event of the tour stop recently finishing up. The Sochi Casino and Resort hosted the EPT with the Main Event running from March 23rd until the 29th. The tournament saw 861 players competing and it was Arseniy Karmatskiy who outlasted the field and earned the first-place finish.
On the final day of the tournament, Karmatskiy was the chip leader, having a nice chip stack advantage over his six competitors. The poker pro would maintain his lead throughout the majority of the final table to work his way to heads-up play against Viktor Shegai. Both players would trade the chip lead throughout the final day, with Karmatskiy finally taking the lead after a major hand and holding on to it for the remainder of the event.
Karmatskiy was at risk with pocket jacks up against Shegai’s A-K off-suit. Shegai was able to flop an ace but Karmatskiy saw a two-outer on the river to take the lead. This left his opponent with only two big blinds.
Karmatskiy would then have a big chip lead and would work on the remaining players at the table to meet Shegai in heads-up play at the end of the day. On the final hand of the event, Shegai would shove with jack-8 and Karmatskiy would call with queen-ten. A ten on the flop gave Karmatskiy the lead and with nothing else showing up on the board, Karmatskiy would win the hand, claiming the first-place finish.
