Martin O’Malley is the governor of the state of Maryland and O’Malley has recently unveiled new legislation which would expand gambling options in the state of Maryland. The new bill would authorize a new casino in the state as well as tax breaks to casino operators.
The new piece of legislation passing would mean many changes for the gambling industry in the state of Maryland. A sixth casino would be allowed in the state, in Prince George County, and all of the state’s gambling facilities would be able to add table games such as poker and blackjack.
Not only will the gambling facilities be able to add the table games but they will also be able to remain open twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. So not only would gamblers have more gaming opportunities but they would also be able to play at any time of day.
Joseph C. Bryce is the chief legislative officer for O’Malley and Bryce commented that the administration worked a great deal to understand the ‘ins and outs of the issue’ before they created the bill. Now the governor and his staff are working hard to gather the votes so the measure will pass.
The General Assembly of Maryland is supposed to meet tomorrow for a short special session and the new bill will be discussed at this time. If the legislation passes, then voters would be able to change portions of the measure during the November election.
O’Malley has also put forth his feelings about the bill by stating: “The legislation we are sending to the members of the General Assembly will create predictability in the marketplace, protect local and city aid being generated at existing sites, ensure authorized facilities are able to be built, and allow the people of Prince George’s County the opportunity to decide whether they want a sixth site for the benefit of their county and revenue base.”
The piece of legislation is fifty five pages long and it is possible that the bill will be amended as it is reviewed during the special session. More will be known on the subject in the next few days.
