Las Vegas seems to be the top city on the mind of professional sports leagues as of late with the NHL already planning on placing a team in the city and an NFL team move also in the works. Now, it seems the NBA may be added to the list of sports teams moving into the area. Jim Murren, the CEO of MGM Resorts International has stated that he is actively trying to see an NBA franchise move to Las Vegas and call the T-Mobile Arena home.
Earlier this week, Murren spoke with KNPR-FM and stated that he is pursuing a franchise of the NBA and that it wouldn’t be an expansion team but most likely a team relocation. The CEO did not say which team he was trying to see relocate and no additional comment is expected at this time. A spokesman for MGM stated that earlier quotes by Murren are confirmed but there is no further comment on the matter.
The NHL is set to become the first major sports league to place a team in Sin City. This comes after Bill Foley paid $500 million to join the league, creating the 31st team in the NHL. As far as the NFL is concerned, the Oakland Raiders are trying to move to the city and call a new stadium that is to be built in Las Vegas their new home. NFL owners should be deciding in January if the team will be approved for the move. Just recently, Governor Brian Sandoval signed a measure into law that will help fund a portion of the stadium by using an increase in hotel room tax.
MGM owns the new T-Mobile Arena which cost $375 million to create. If an NBA team decided to make the move, it would help to fill in dates that are currently vacant within the new venue. Mike Bass, a spokesman for the NBA, commented earlier this week that there are no teams in the NBA that plan on relocating.
If the NFL gives approval and an NBA team eventually makes a move, there will be even more unique visitors heading to the city of Las Vegas. More visitor’s means more revenue will be created as these individuals will enjoy casino gaming, entertainment, hotels, dining and more.
