The 2015 World Series of Poker has been ripe with excitement, with new headlines each and every day. From the 14th WSOP bracelet win of Phil Hellmuth to the allegations of cheating during the $10K Heads-Up No Limit Hold’em Championship, the series has been quite exciting. But perhaps today’s story will be the most odd and unique. Christian Pham is no stranger to the game of Texas Hold’em and decided to enter in the $1,500 event, but accidentally entered an event which featured a game he had no experience in. After receiving help from fellow players and studing the game the first night, the player was able to amazingly earn the first place win.
Imagine Pham’s surprise to find he was dealt five cards instead of two and then come to find out that he had not paid $1,500 to play Texas Hold’em but instead will be competing in the 2-7 Draw Lowball No Limit event. By the time Pham realized his mistake, it was too late to unregister.
According to Pham, the dealer had begun dealing by the time he realized what was taking place, so he could not have unregistered. Having no experience with the poker variant, Pham began to speak with fellow players and stated that a nice man beside him pointed out that 2-3-4-5-7 is the nuts and 2-3-4-6-7 is the second nuts. He made notes in his phone and tried to determine which hands he could play to move forward in the competition in Nevada.
Once day one was over and Pham was still alive in the event, he got online and learned more about the format. Pham then used the skills he learned to move forward in the event. Top pros of the game including Huck Seed, Mike Leah, Dan Smith and Mohsin Charania were eliminated from game play in the process.
Surprisingly enough, Pham now loves the game and plans on participating in the 2016 event, this time on purpose! In the end, the poker player was able to earn the gold bracelet and $81,314 for his efforts.
