$1 Million+ Prize Won by Mitchell Towner in WSOP $1,500 Monster Stack No-Limit Hold’em Tournament

Imagine being a player who loves poker but never really competes in major events. Imagine being that player and putting up $1,500, a big chunk of change, and competing in a major World Series of Poker event. On top of competing in the event, now imagine you win. This is exactly what Mitchell Towner has done after outlasting the field of 6,927 players to win the $1,500 Monster Stack No-Limit Hold’em tournament, becoming an instant millionaire and earning his first big win ever.

Speaking to WSOP reporters in Nevada after the win, Towner stated that he has only played in like two events where the buy-in was more than $100. The college professor of the University of Arizona is now a WSOP gold bracelet winner, having earned just over $1.1 million for his efforts. Towner even stated that he doesn’t really play the game and is just a casual fan.

When the final day of game play began, Towner would hold the 6^th chip position and 26 players would remain. Several top players would be eliminated during the final day, including T.J. Cloutier, Matt Affleck and David Pham. By the time the tournament whittled down to the heads up round, it would be Towner and Dorian Rios who remained. Towner would have a small lead but would soon be up 3 to 1 before the final hand would take place.

On the final hand, Rios would limp in from the button and Towner would move 3.3 million in. Rios would go all-in and Towner would call after a few moments of thought. Towner showed A-7 off suit while Rios held pocket 3s.

The board fell J-9-7-K-9 which gave Towner the higher pair and the title win, his first ever in the WSOP.
