Several states in the US are focused on sports betting this year, wanting the opportunity to offer legalized wagering options within their borders. Just last week, Maryland became the latest state to introduce legislation in regards to sports betting. The new bill would allow sports betting legalization if the option were to be made legal via federal law, basically if the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act were to be repealed.
H 989 would see Maryland studying the sports betting industry and recommendations made in regards to regulations. The bill would create a task force to complete the study. If the bill were passed into law it would have to move through legislature as well as be signed by the governor along with being approved with a voter referendum.
Oversight for sports betting would be provided by the State Lottery and Gaming Control Commission with casinos as well as racetracks having the ability to apply for a license to operate sports betting services. If passed, the law would only take affect if the federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act were to be repealed or amended.
This is a different take than what other states such as New Jersey are trying to do in regards to legalizing sports betting. Legislators in New Jersey are challenging the federal law with their case set to be appealed within the United States Supreme Court sometime this year. If New Jersey were to win their case and Maryland has H 989 passed into law, then the state would be set to begin offering sports betting operations.
Maryland has been busy when it comes to the gambling industry this year. The state continues to see an increase in casino gaming revenues each month, especially after the opening of the MGM National Harbor casino which begin offering gaming earlier this year. Back in January, the state also announced that regulations were implemented in regards to daily fantasy sports betting. The state had seen regulations proposed mid-2016 and by the start of this year, the regulations were officially implemented.
