Sports betting figures for September have been released by officials of Nevada, showing that gamblers wagered just over $558 million for the month, setting a new record in monthly betting. Boxing seemed to help sports books to see a huge month of activity in betting, but the main earner was of course football.
Close to $30 million of the total amount bet on sports in September was wagered on the 16th of the month during the Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez boxing match. The NFL season also began in early September and of course, football is the most popular sport when it comes to betting. While boxing helped to produce the record-setting amount for September, football brought in the most bets for the month. Close to $370 million was wagered on football, be it NFL or NCAA wagering.
Baseball also had a big month, producing $142.4 million of the $558.2 million earned. The remaining wagers took place with pari-mutuel bets and parlay cards. Of the $558.2 million, the sports books were able to keep $44.4 million. This revenue amount is just over 8% more than what was earned for the state in September of last year.
For now, Nevada is the only state with legalized and operating sports books. The state of New Jersey is currently preparing to see a case reviewed regarding sports betting within the United States Supreme Court. If the judges rule in the state’s favor, sports betting could soon be offered in New Jersey as well as other states that have made legislative moves to be ready in case of a positive ruling.
To allow sports betting across the nation, the US Supreme Court will have to decide that changes will need to be made in regards to the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, allowing states to make the decision as to if they will offer such wagering options. It will be interesting to see what the ruling will be and if sports betting opens up to other states, will Nevada be able to remain on top or will another state be able to give the existing sports betting industry a run for their money.
