NFL Commissioner Still Not On Board with Sports Betting

NCAA Football

While the city of Las Vegas is setting up to build a new NFL stadium, the NFL Commissioner is still not on board with the sports betting industry. Roger Goodell spoke recently during an NFL owners meeting on the topic of sports betting, with a question raised on the topic based on the state of Nevada recently approving a stadium plan to raise $750 million by way of hotel room tax that could see the Oakland Raiders moving to Sin City. On the topic of sports betting, Goodell stated via Twitter that the NFL remains very much opposed to gambling on sports and want to make sure they do what is right for the game.

Las Vegas is the only area in the United States that currently offers single-sport wagering and is considered the gambling capital of the nation. The city has been approved to create a new stadium and the Oakland Raiders would like to call the venue home. However, the team must be given approval by the NFL owners before moving forward. The owners are supposed to meet this January to decide if the team will be approved for the move.

Sports betting is prevalent in Las Vegas as well as throughout the state of Nevada. If the owners of NFL teams do give the go-ahead for the Raiders to move to the city, it may be a requirement that sports books not take wagers on games that involve the Raiders. This would be a big request but might be something that the league feels is necessary if the team were to move to the region.

For now, we know the NFL continues to be opposed to sports gambling and a team may be heading to the gambling capital of the United States. It will be interesting to see what the outcome will be early next year when NFL team owners gather to decide the fate of the Raiders and if any stipulations will be put in place for the team to be able to make the move, if approved.
