Phil "Poker Brat" Hellmuth
Phil Hellmuth was born on July 16th, 1964 and would be the oldest of five children in his family. He was born and grew up in Madison Wisconsin. Phil liked to play board games as a child and was not introduced to poker until he started college at the University of Wisconsin. He learned how to play the game and participated in cash games at the student union. Hellmuth would next go on to play professors in high stakes poker games. He attended college for three years until he decided to drop out and pursue poker professionally.
At the young age of 24, Hellmuth entered the World Series of Poker. He went on to win the Main Event that year, 1989, and beat Johnny Chan, two-time defending champion. He would go on to win ten more WSOP bracelets. Phil received his tenth bracelet in 2006 during the $1,000 No Limit Hold’em with re-buys event. This would tie him with poker legends Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan but Hellmuth had all his bracelets in Texas Hold’em. During the 2007 WSOP, he would win his 11th bracelet and break the record for most bracelets won. Phil won that bracelet during the $1,500 No Limit Hold’em Event.
Hellmuth also holds other records in the poker world. He has the most WSOP cashes at sixty three and is tied for the most WSOP final tables with T.J. Cloutier at thirty nine. Hellmuth is ranked seventh place on the WSOP All Time Money List and has won over $5.5 million at the WSOP. He has yet to win a World Poker Tour event but has cashed out nine times. Phil is the champion of season three of Late Night Poker.
Phil Hellmuth has also produced instructional poker videos and written articles for various online poker sites. He has also written poker books and is now the commentator for Bravo’s Celebrity Poker Showdown. Hellmuth is known for snide comments made to his competitors, especially after a bad beat. He is considered by some the “Poker Brat”. In 2007 Phil was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame.
Phil Hellmuth lives with his wife and two children in Palo Alto, California. He can be found playing on the UltimateBet website and now has a ClubHellmuth website where fans can get updates on him, his strategies and buy clothing.
