Chris Moneymaker
Chris Moneymaker grew up playing bridge with his grandmother and blackjack with his father in Tennessee. Chris attended the University of Tennessee and earned a master’s degree in accounting. Chris began working as an accountant in Tennessee and lived a simple life. He enjoyed playing cards especially since seeing the movie Rounders. The movie inspired Chris and his friends to begin playing Texas Hold’em. After playing friends for a while Chris wanted more. Chris needed a bigger challenge. PokerStars would then enter the picture. Chris would play in multi-table tournaments with $20 and $30 buy-ins and would even win some.
Chris then entered into a $39 satellite tournament. The tournament would have 18 players in it and Chris would win. That win took Chris to a satellite to the World Series of Poker. Chris would win the $10,000 WSOP package turning his $39 buy-in into $10,000. Chris went to the 2003 World Series of Poker and amazingly he would win. Up against well known pro Sammy Farha, Chris’s two pair would turn into a full house in the final hand for the win. Chris took home $2.5 million and is created for the poker boom that has arisen in the years since his win. What was really amazing is the fact that the tournament was the first time Chris had ever played in a live event.
After Chris’s big win, he quit his job and became a celebrity spokesman for the WSOP owner Harrah’s Entertainment. Chris also signed with PokerStars and can be found playing online at the PokerStar website. Chris has also written his autobiography titled Moneymaker: How an Amateur Poker Player Turned $40 into $2.5 Million at the World Series of Poker. IT was published in 2005. Chris is married and has one daughter who was born just three months before his big win at the WSOP.
