Chris "Jesus" Ferguson
Chris Ferguson known in the poker world as "Jesus" due mainly to his likeness of the original, began playing cards at the age of ten but didn't actually become a serious card player until later on in life, in the year of 1994. In 1994 Ferguson entered college at UCLA and began playing poker in Internet Relay Chat (IRC) rooms.
From there, Chris ventured into local poker tournaments around California. Chris finished well in a few cash events during 1993, in a variety of poker games that included; Asian Stud, 7 Card Stud, and Pai Gow Poker games. Ferguson's first 1st place victory came at the Masters of Poker Championship III the next year in 1994, where he took the first place title in the $300 lowball event.
Chris Ferguson Wins the World Series of Poker
Chris made another huge step in his career as a professional poker player when in 1995 he signed up to play in his first ever World Series of Poker (WSOP) event, and cashed. Ferguson took 5th place in the $1,500 buy-in Seven-Card Razz event. A few years later, Chris went on to win his only, to date, main event title in the WSOP in 2000, making headlines online and in gambling news outlets around the world.
Chris Ferguson received his PhD in Computer Science that focused on virtual network algorithms in 1999. He was an undergraduate for five years and spent a total of thirteen years as a graduate student. Ferguson's subjects of expertise are game theory and theoretical probability. Chris comes from a family of scholars, made for the game of poker. Chris's dad teaches statistics at UCLA and his mom has a PhD in Topography. Chris's style of play during poker is, obviously based on his background, very mathematical and he relies on his knowledge of game theory and computers to help make his poker decisions.
The nickname 'Jesus' came mainly from his long brown hair and beard and he also can be spotted wearing his trademark black wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. This trend got started in the early days as Ferguson was trying to hide the fact that he was a college student. He carrys the appearance of a rocker type hippy, which surely made him a few bucks early in his career.
Ferguson helped start the Full Tilt Poker website in 2004 and is still actively involved with the online poker room helping develop the software and trying to keep it the most innovative poker room on the Internet as well as being a sponsored poker pro. You will on occasion find Chris at the Full Tilt tables along with a lot of his poker professional friends.
Chris Ferguson is also known for the ability to cut carrots, bananas, pickles, watermelons and melons in half by throwing a playing card at it from ten feet away. He was a ballroom dancing instructor and still enjoys swing dancing in which he was the president of the swing dancing club at UCLA. If you think Chris Ferguson's math skills are an advantage at the poker table, you can also add in he has a photographic memory.
