Phil Hellmuth is definitely on top of his poker game and he showed his skills recently at the World Series of Poker Europe Main Event in Cannes. The Poker Brat was able to win the event and earn a record setting 13th WSOP bracelet for his efforts.
Hellmuth was able to defeat Sergii Baranov in heads up play to earn the €1.02 million payday and the WSOP bracelet. Hellmuth was stunned by the win and stated: “I’m humbled by this. I’m still trying to figure out is this is real life.”
Hellmuth not only added a record setting 13th bracelet to his collection but he also took the lead in the 2012 WSOP Player of the Year race. The pro is obviously working hard to maintain his status as a top poker pro. Hellmuth can only be defeated in the race if Greg Merson wins the WSOP Main Event.
When final table play began in the main event, Hellmuth was the chip leader and he played well, making hard decisions to make heads up play. Hellmuth commented on his game play by stating: “There is no doubt in my mind that this is the greatest No-Limit Hold’em tournament I’ve ever played.”
When heads up play began between Hellmuth and Baranov, the two would battle it out in only a few hands. Both players have been picking at each other during the final table play and it would be just a short time before Hellmuth would be named the winner. On the final hand, Baranov shoved all in with Ace-Four and Hellmuth called with Ace-Ten stating he was going to win. The board bricked and Hellmuth did in fact win and the win gave him the bracelet, the WSOP player of the year first place standing and the fact that he is now the only player to have won both a North American and European Main Event WSOP Title.
