Last year’s WSOP Colossus was a big success in terms of player participation and this year, the Colossus II is setting up to be even bigger and better. Colossus II will offer up $1 million for the first place finisher with a total of $7 million guaranteed in prize money. Organizers of the event listened to last year’s criticisms and have made changes accordingly.
The WSOP Colossus last year had 22,374 players competing and re-entering with a buy-in of $565. The event was so large, it broke the live poker tournament record, creating a total prize pool of $11,187,000. Players did criticize the event, stating the prize distribution was unfair with the top ten percent of the field earning almost double the buy-in while the winter only earned just over $638,000.
Organizers took the player feedback into consideration and have made changes for Colossus II. The event will be the first open event of the WSOP 2016 series and will have three opening flights, taking place on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of June. The structure for payouts will also change, with every player who makes it past any of the three Day 1s will be in the money. The prize pool was increased from $5 million to $7 million guaranteed with $1 million guaranteed for first place.
The WSOP for 2016 will take place from May 31st to July 18th and will see the schedule start with the Casino Employees Event as always. The Main Event will be the final event with the standard $10,000 buy-in and with three opening flights taking place on the 9th, 10th and 11th of July.
The WSOP is expected to release the full schedule of events either next month or by February. The WSOP did reveal that the series will include such events as the Little One for One Drop, Millionaire Maker and the Monster Stack event. It will also be interesting to see if the series will add more online events than the 2015, as players seem to be excited to take part in WSOP gaming online.
