Witnesses Named for Today’s Federal Online Poker Hearing

congresslargeAs we mentioned just a few days ago, the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee of Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade are set to meet today and the list of witnesses for the hearing has been released. Many top proponents of online poker and gambling will be speaking today as well opponents to the idea.

The hearing was scheduled to discuss the current regulatory landscape in the US as well as the reinterpretation of the Wire Act as set forth by the DOJ. H.R. 2666 will also be under scrutiny, otherwise known as The Internet Poker Freedom Act, created by Joe Barton.

Witnesses for the hearing:

John Pappas                       Executive Director of the Poker Players Alliance

Andrew Abbound            Vice President of Government Relations and Community Development,

Las Vegas Sands Corporation

Geoff Freeman                   President and Chief Executive Officer, American Gaming Association

Les Bernal                            National Director, Stop Predatory Gambling

Kurt Eggert                          Professor of Law, Dale E. Fowler School of Law, Chapman University

Rachel Volberg                  Ph.D., Associate Professor, School of Public Health and Health Sciences,

University of Massachusetts Amherst

The Poker Players Alliance will be represented by John Pappas during the meeting as well as Geoff Freeman representing the American Gaming Association. These two are of course in favor of online gaming options and will be joined by Kurt Eggert and Rachel Volberg, both professors involved in the gambling industry.

Eggert actually teaches gambling law and is a proponent of consumer protection and wants to ensure that if online gaming is going to take place that players are protected. Eggert has spoken before on the subject and wants to see regulation that creates an even landscape for gaming for both the professional and beginner player. Volberg is considered to be the best problem gambling epidemiologist with the most experience on the subject. She will be providing a scientific look at the ramifications of such activities.

And of course, the other side will be represented as well; those who are opposed to online gaming. Taking this stance is Andrew Abboud and Les Bernal. Abboud is the Las Vegas Sands Corp VP of Government Relations and Community Development. Abboud is connected to Sheldon Adelson, and we all know how he feels about online gaming. Bernal works with the Stop Predatory Gambling as the National Director and is opposed to any type of gambling in the US.
