Why Delaware and Nevada Need Interstate Poker

DE gamblingBoth the state of Delaware and Nevada offer online poker options alongside New Jersey in the United States but the two states have failed to reach the player numbers needed to be successful. New Jersey is the poker star at the moment in the US, with consistent traffic in higher numbers, but still has yet to reach the estimations that were once figured in the beginning of online poker.

Delaware and Nevada recognized their issues and signed an agreement, a first of its kind, back in February to allow both states to pool their player base for interstate poker. Along with the agreement, the Multi State Internet Gaming Association was created to help other states get involved with interstate gaming as well.

It was believed that at some point this summer, the two states would begin to work together but this has yet to happen. Both states need to get the ball rolling with interstate online poker as they both are struggling with traffic numbers as well as revenues.

Delaware has little to no poker traffic and despite this, had seen a consistent increase in growth each month since November of last year. However, in May, the state began to see a decline and online poker revenues dropped 22%, a significant number. According to PokerScout figures, the state sees around 25 players or less in 24 Hour Peak times, which is a far cry from the numbers that are needed to generate substantial revenues.

With the World Series of Poker in town, the state of Nevada is seeing a nice increase of online poker gaming. Before the WSOP, players numbers were in the low 100s but now with the WSOP in action, the numbers have increased to over 400 for 24 hour peak times. However, once the series is over, the state is sure to see a very significant drop in player numbers. It will be interesting to see the actual percentage of loss once the series completes in a few days.

When the two states partnership does go into effect, it will show other states that such agreements can take place and other states may feel comfortable joining the Multi State Internet Gaming Association in the future. New Jersey has been looking into interstate options but has yet to join the group so it will be interesting to see once the interstate options begin, if New Jersey gets on board.
