The 2012 World Series of Poker keeps on rolling on and as of yesterday, Event #11 finished up. The event was a Pot Limit Omaha tournament with a buy-in of $1,500. Almost 1,000 players registered to compete and after the final day of play it was Dutchman Vincent Van Der Fluit who earned the first place prize.
This would be the first gold bracelet earned by Van Der Fluit and he would work hard to earn it once final table play began. Nine players would return on the third day of play and the only player sitting at the table with a gold bracelet would be Tristan Wade.
Charles Tonne proved to be tough competition as he would return on day 3 with the chip lead. Tonne was also the chip leader on day 2 play. The first player to be eliminated from the competition would be David Schnettler. Schnettler was one of the short stacked players and he would go be forced all in rather quickly. Schnettler would go all with A-K-J-5 on a flop of 9-10-J. Alex Dovzhenko had earned the nut straight on the flop and he would hold this hand to win the hand.
Just a short time later, Calvin Anderson would go all in on a flop of 6-6-10 and Dovzhenko would call with trip sixes. Anderson was trying for a club flush draw and he wouldn’t get it as Dovzhenko earned a full house on the turn, so Anderson would be eliminated in eighth place.
Brian Garbe would go all in with A-J-7-6 and would be called by Tonne who held A-Q-7-3. The board ran J-10-6-10-7 and Tonne’s pair would eliminate Garbe in 7th place. Next out would be Rodney Brown after he went all in against Van Der Fluit. A full house on the turn would give Van Der Fluit the hand and Brown would be eliminated in 6th place.
Dovzhenko had done well up until this point, as he knocked a few players out of final table play. But his time would come when he would go all in with a pair of aces only to be eliminated by Tonne who earned a full house. Tone would earn fifth place.
After this, players would get a half hour break but once game play began again the frantic pace would start again. On the first hand back from break, Damien Lhommeau would go all in preflop and Tonne would call. Tonne earned a straight and Lhommeau would be eliminated in fourth place.
The pace continued and just two hands later Wade would be the short stack and he would go all in with K-Q-J-9 and would be called by Tonne who held J-9-8-5. The board fell 7-4-5-8-Q and Wade would be eliminated in third place, earning just over $100,000.
Heads up play would soon began and like the rest of the day, it would be quick. Van Der Fluit and Tonne would be about even in chips when heads up play began but Van Der Fluit would slowly take away from Tonne’s stack. A short time later, Van Der Fluit would hit a good hand and he would pull a 3 to 1 chip lead over Tonne.
It would take only two more hands before the tournament was over. On the final hand, Van Der Fluit opened with 60,000 and Tonne called. The flop read A-5-2 and Van Der Fluit would check raise 315,000. This would put Tonne al in and he was working a flush draw. Van Der Fluit held two pair and was working on a higher flush draw. In the end both got the club they were looking for but with a higher draw, Van Der Fluit earned the hand and the win.
