Viacheslav Zhukov takes down WSOP Event #58

Event #58 of the World Series of Poker saw 526 players posting the $3,000 buy-in to the Pot Limit Omaha Hi-Low Split 8-or-Better event. The event would run over three days and then after an unscheduled day 4 of play, Viacheslav Zhukov would earn the first place win taking home $330,277 for his performance.

When day 3 began, Felician Johnico would hold the chip lead and about twenty eliminations would take place fairly quickly. Eleven players would remain and Johnico would soon be knocked out of the competition after she decided to go all in against Roch Cousineau.

Daniel McNally would be eliminated in tenth place and this would signal the final table. Juan Ramirez would be the first casualty of final table play after taking on Cousineau and then Scotty Nguyen would be eliminated in eighth followed closely by Jack Ward in seventh.

David Baker had taken out the two players and he would then eliminate Yuval Bronshtein in sixth place. Chris Bell would then eliminate Randy Ohel and this would signal four handed play. It would be some time before the next elimination would take place.

Eventually Cousineau and Baker would go head to head. Baker held A-Q-Q-J while Cousineau held A-7-8-3. The flop fell K-9-6 and Cousineau went al in and Baker called. Cousineau held the better heart draw as well as other options. A 5 on the turn gave Cousineau the straight and an A on the river would send Baker out in fourth place.

The final three would play a little while longer on day 3 but eventually the event would break and return for day four. Zhukov held the chip lead on day 4 and Cousineau was not far behind, while Bell pulled up the rear. Bell would fall early in the day and Zhukov and Cousineau would begin heads up play. The end would not be easy as the chip lead would exchange hands several times. It would be about three hours of game play before the final hand would take place.

The final hand would see Zhukov raise 250,000 on the button. Cousineau would go all in with 755,000 and Zhukov would call. The hands would be turned over the Cousineau would hold A-A-10-9 while Zhukov would hold A-5-J-2. The flop fell 4-2-5 and the K and 8 on the turn and river would send Cousineau out in second place, giving Zhukov the first place win and his second WSOP bracelet!
