Vanessa Selbst and Ted Forrest Claim WSOP Gold; 1st Week of WSOP Concludes

wsopThe first week of the 2014 World Series of Poker has concluded and during the week, some poker pros have shined while others came up just a little bit short. The first seven events of the series have now concluded and in the mix, was Vanessa Selbst making history with her third WSOP bracelet win and Ted Forrest earning his sixth gold bracelet, just barely keeping Phil Hellmuth from a record breaking 14th bracelet.

The completed events of the WSOP schedule are as follows:

Event #1              Casino Employees No Limit Hold’em event

Event #2              Mixed Max No Limit Hold’em

Event #3              Pot Limit Omaha

Event #4              No Limit Hold’em

Event #5              Limit 2-7 Triple Draw Lowball

Event #6              No Limit Hold’em Shootout

Event #7              Seven Card Razz

One of the highlights of the week was when Vanessa Selbst won Event #2, the $25k Mixed Max event. Selbst earned her third WSOP bracelet with the win and became the first female to ever win 3 bracelets during open events of the tournament series. Selbst had to overcome an almost 7 to 1 chip lead to earn the win, but did so, against Jason Mo during the final round of game play.

It was during hand #63 that Selbst won a huge pot and earned the lead. Mo tried to come back and even doubled up soon after Selbst took the lead but was unable to gain any more ground and Selbst would claim the $871,147 top prize.

The next highlight of the week involved Event #7 the $1,500 Razz tournament. Ted Forrest and Phil Hellmuth outlasted the 350 other competitors to make heads up play and Hellmuth was working hard for a record breaking 14th WSOP bracelet. However, this was not to be as Forrest denied the pro by earning the first place win.

Hellmuth would start heads up play with a slight 2 to 1 chip lead and both played intensely, so much so the length of the final round continued until both players barely had any big bets left between them. It was back and forth continuously until Forrest earned a win with 6-5-3-2-A and Hellmuth was then short on chips. It was just a few minutes later Forrest would claim the win and the $121,196 first place prize.

The 2014 WSOP continues with Events #8, #9 and #10 in full swing. We will continue to cover the highlights of this year’s series and keep you informed of the most talked about events!
