Professional poker players are going to be unhappy with a new bill that was recently released within the state of Nevada as the opportunity for staking deals may be at risk. The new bill is titled SB 40 and has been created to reduce the amount of money laundering activities within the state in regards to sports betting. However, according to the language used, this could also include staking deals which play a large part in the WSOP as well as other major poker events within the state.
According to a report by PokerNewsDaily, the bill was pre-filed for the Nevada Gaming Control Board criminalizing an activity that receives, directly or indirectly, any compensation or reward, or a percentage or share of money or property that is played. This includes from anyone who accepts or facilitates any bet or wager upon the result of a race, sporting event or a future contingent event that is not fully licensed under federal, state or municipal laws and regulations.
The bill also includes language that makes it an offense to transfer or deliver payments that are based on the outcome of such a wager. With this activity, the penalty has been set at jail time from one to six years as well as $5,000 fine.
With the language of the bill, many players are concerned that this will affect the staking aspects of such events as the WSOP. Players can be at risk when staking a player or being staked during live events such as the World Series of Poker.
If the bill includes staking deals, then the number of entries into major events such as the Big One for One Drop of the WSOP could be drastically reduced. Players who would need to stake their game play would essentially not be able to take part in such events without the assistance of stakeholders. Players might not put up the money themselves if they have to pay the entire amount out of their own pocket.
It will be interesting to see how this bill will affect the poker industry and if any changes will be made to help players be able to continue to create staking deals for major events.
