Thirteen hours of online poker – without spending a dime – and Jason Teixeira is NAPT bound. The man from Lower Lake, California, will be off to the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut to compete in the NAPT, April 7th through the 11th.
Teixeira told a local reporter, “I feel like I’m living every average, online poker player’s dream. It’s just unreal.†Tom Marchese, winner of the NAPT Venetian last February, scored $827,648 out of a $4,017,740 prize pool.
The Northern California resident was one of 10,000 people to enter the online poker tournament at PokerStars that qualified the top 36 players to move on to the championship tournament. Jason Teixeira qualified, and competed with 500 others in the online championship tournament for a seat in the live tournament, which will be covered by ESPN2.
Crediting luck for his fortunate win, Teixeira stated that, “I got two royal flushes; one in each tournament,†pointing out how rare it is to get a royal flush at all, let alone twice. In fact, Teixeira came into the championship tournament final table with the short stack; 78,000 chips against the chip leader’s 422,000.
Teixeira said his strategy was to just sit back and let his opponents battle it out until he came heads-up with the last one standing. With 266,000 chips to his opponent’s 1.1 million, Teixeira shoved all-in with a king-high straight, eliciting a call that brought their stacks to a more level playing ground. Soon, Teixeira found the roles reversed, with himself holding 1.1 million chips to his opponent’s 266,000. His opponent pushed all-in, and Teixeira called, winning the championship with a flush.
The prize package includes entry into the live NAPT Mohegan Sun event in Connecticut, as well as airfare and accommodations at the casino. Teixeira said he plans to bring his father along to enjoy the experience with him.
