Richard Brown, the Queen’s District Attorney has filed indictments as part of an investigation into an illegal gambling ring of New York, an investigation started in December of 2014. Named in the indictment is poker pro Jay Sharon of New York. Brown has named Sharon as the leader of the illegal sports betting ring, having earned over $3.5 million a year with the illegal operations.
Sharon is one of eight named in the indictment by the District Attorney, as part of an investigation that has spanned over a year’s time and involved the Organized Crime Unit of the New York Police Department. Brown named Sharon as the leader based on the information uncovered during the investigation. The investigation revealed that betting services were taking place illegally within the state, both online and via telephone.
Several raids took place in Queens, at different locations, including Queens, New York and Nassau, Bahamas. The police department were able to recover $93,000 in cash as well as gambling records which were used to outline the books offered by the illegal gambling group.
Sharon has been arrested based on the charges along with Joshua Handler and Jonathan Cianciotto, who are believed to be Sharon’s agents. Also included in the indictment are Vincent Zaccario, Frank Nista, Christopher Hansen, Emilio Testa and Gary Schreiber. If a guilty ruling is found against the men, as many as 25 years could be given as a sentence for each man involved.
This investigation into illegal gambling is part of an overall crackdown in the United States in regards to illegal sports betting. It has been estimated that in the US alone, illegal sports betting operations are worth almost $150 billion.
Brown stated that over the past few years a number of the illegal operations have been taken down and the operators have been put out of business. Brown believes the result of these takedowns is a significant dent has been made in illegal gambling across the nation and individuals have been saved from gambling losses.
