Poker Hall of Fame to Induct Eric Drache and Brian Roberts

The induction nominations and voting is now complete for the 2012 Poker Hall of Fame and this year, Eric Drache and Brian ‘Sailor’ Roberts will be inducted. The two men are legends in the poker industry and will be officially inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame on October 30th, right before the Main Event of the 2012 World Series of Poker concludes.

Drache is a poker player who was nominated for his contributions to the game. Drache has a nice poker career but focused more on the aspects of the game off of the felt. Drache was the WSOP tournament director during the 70s and was given the credit of creating satellite tournaments as well as allow players to pool money to be able to pay the full buy-in to events. Drache has also worked as the poker room manger for several top poker rooms including the Bellagio, Mirage and the Golden Nugget.

Drache was surprised to be nominated and to be named for induction for the Poker Hall of Fame. He commented: “I’m not only surprised and honored to have been selected, I’m also a bit embarrassed considering the other nominees. When Jack Binion and myself worked on creating the Hall of Fame, I never consider myself a potential candidate. I’m particularly happy for the family of ‘Sailor’ Roberts. ‘Sailor’ by everyone’s account, including my own personal observations, was a great player and played many games very well.”

Roberts is another man that had a strong impact on the poker community. Roberts traveled as a partner for Doyle Brunson and ‘Amarillo Slim’ Preston many years ago and won two WSOP bracelets during his career. Unfortunately Roberts passed away in 1995 but had such an impact that he is now being inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame.

Crandell Addington, a member of the Hall of Fame, commented on Roberts by stating: “In a time fifty years ago when poker players relied on luck, Sailor was developing sophisticated strategies that would enable him to make his own luck. At a time in which professional poker players were viewed as outlaws and poker was illegal, he formed a partnership with Doyle and Slim and they traveled across the country from poker game to poker game. They deployed advanced strategies unknown at the time that featured playing their opponents hands on many occasions rather than their own hands. More often than not, they got the money.”

With the new inductions, there will now be 44 members of the Poker Hall of Fame. The ceremony will take place in just a few weeks when both Roberts and Drache will be honored.
