Poor Phil Ivey. Since the 2012 World Series of Poker began, Ivey has made it to five final tables only to be eliminated. Ivey is searching for his ninth WSOP bracelet and so far he continues to fall short. Ivey made it to the final table of Event #35, a $2,500 Mixed Hold’em, but fell short, as Chris Tyrba won his first WSOP bracelet.
The event saw only 393 players register to compete and by Day 3 of play, nine players returned. The players left were: Chris Tyrba, the chip leader, Salman Behbehani, Michael Foti, Michael Gathy, Joep van den Bijgaart, Erik Cajelais, Phil Ivey, Samuel Golbuff and Brent Wheeler.
Michael Foti would be the first to go and then it would be Ivey’s turn. Ivey would be eliminated at the hands of Cajelais and with the elimination; Ivey tied a record for the most final table appearances in a single series.
Brent Wheeler would be next, followed by Samuel Golbuff, Michael Gathy, Joep van den Bijgaart and Salman Behbehani. This would leave Cajelais and Tryba in heads up play. Both players held a nice chip stack and Tryba would hold a slight lead.
Heads up play would last, amazingly, only one hand. The game had reached the No Limit Hold’em stage and the flop fell Q-9-4. Tryba checked and Cajelais wagered 45,000. Tryba called and the turn showed a Jack. Tryba check called Cajelais’s 130,000 bet and an 8 on the river showed Tryba wagering 25000 and Cajelais decided to go all in.
Tryba called and showed 10-9 for the nuts and Cajelais held only K-10 for a king high straight which put him out of the tournament and gave Tryba his first WSOP bracelet.
