Pennsylvania Officials Discuss Online Gambling Industry in US

Pennsylvania SealSince April, residents in the state of Nevada have had access to real money online poker gambling options and with Delaware and New Jersey launching in just a few weeks, the online gambling market in the United States is growing, slowly but surely. As these three states make up the online gambling industry in the US, other states are looking into the option.

One such state is Pennsylvania. An online gambling conference was recently held in the state to focus on state compacts, pooled liquidity, state iGaming regulation and more.  Major gambling news outlets like PokerNews and USPokerSites.co have been reporting that Pennsylvania is looking to make a very real push for internet gambling within the state.

The World Regulatory Briefing USA took place this past week in Philadelphia and featured speakers from various avenues of gaming in the US including those from Nevada, DC, and of course Pennsylvania. The state of Pennsylvania only began offering casino gaming in 2004 but in these few years the state has pushed to the forefront of gaming and many in the industry have wondered in the state will get in on the online gambling action.

Bill Ryan, who is the Gaming Control Board Chairman of Pennsylvania, spoke during the two-day conference in Philadelphia on gambling within the state. Ryan pointed out that it took a quarter century for the state to begin offering brick and mortar gaming and he does not see ‘any real groundswell right now for Internet gaming.’

However, Ryan’s feelings may be different if neighboring states, New Jersey and Delaware, prove to be successful in their own online gaming ventures – particularly in online poker.

During the conference, Ryan and many others stated that online poker and casino games for the US are a ‘new frontier’ for individual states who want to find a new source for tax revenue. Because the of the large revenues that can be created via online gambling, many in the industry feel as though a rapid expansion can be expected nationwide.

Ryan further stated that the gaming board understands that online gaming is a very big deal. However, there are major hurdles to cross including regulatory and technical issues. Not to mention legalities. If more states begin to enter the online industry, a response may be prompted from a federal level.

Summing up the conference well was Michael Pollack, the Spectrum Gaming Group Managing Director, who stated: “Internet gaming is going to happen. How it’s going to happen is an unknown.”
