Online Poker To Be Discussed on Federal Level

USA FlagThe online poker industry in the United States has recently been moving on a state by state level as of the past few months and the federal government has yet to make a move. Nevada, Delaware and New Jersey all offer online gambling options in their individual borders. We have now learned that the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade will be meeting next week to host a hearing titled “The State of Online Gaming”. The hearing will look at the H.R. 2666 bill which was created by Representative Joe Barton as well as the overall online gambling industry.

The Subcommittee announced the meeting on December 3rd with the release of a hearing notice. According to the group, the meeting will be examining the ‘current regulatory landscape’ as well as online gaming after the reinterpretation of the Wire Act by the Department of the Justice.

Also on the docket is the H.R. 2666 bill which is known as The Internet Poker Freedom Act. Barton has been working for many years to try and see online poker legalized and regulated across the United States. This bill would create a framework for states to have the option of offering online gaming.  Barton remains positive of the bill and feels as though it will eventually pass.

The meeting will take place on the 10th of December and the list of the people scheduled to testify during the hearing has not been announced as of yet. The hearing of the sub-committee is a significant move for the US online gambling industry but only a small step in the legislative process. The hearing can be watched online and we will be staying up to date on this subject, including the information discussed during the meeting as well as who will be included in the hearing.
