In the state of Nevada, both Ultimate Poker and WSOP.com use geolocation service to determine if players are located in the actual state to be eligible for game play. Players can only compete in real money action if they are located within the states borders. The mobile phone tracking system helps to limit the game play to only those in the state but earlier this week, players were angered due to a geolocation disruption.
AT&T held network infrastructure maintenance on October 21st and the 23rd. This is nothing unusual but when players tried to log on to WSOP and Ultimate Poker to play online, they were not allowed. Users saw a message on their devices that stated their location was not verified. So despite the fact the players were in the state, they were unable to compete.
Officials of the WSOP took to the popular poker forums TwoPlusTwo to be able to discuss the outage. According to the WSOP, ten tournaments were cancelled and they tried to warn players about the outage. When service was interrupted, several players were affected negatively. Many players were knocked from their tournament and could only watch as they lost blind after blind without being able to compete.
Many players were very angry as they were kicked out during game play. On TwoPlusTwo, WSOP representative tried to warn players of what was going on. The WSOP stated they did not have any control over the issue and that they were just as frustrated as players. The WSOP took to TwoPlusTwo, Twitter, Facebook and Google+ to try and warn players so they would not lose any cash or have a bad experience.
The WSOP is now working to improve the geolocation service and wants to avoid this type of situation in the future. Ultimate Poker players were just as upset and asked the same questions to their representatives. It will be interesting to see what changes are made to try and avoid instances like this in the future.
