Just yesterday it was reported that the state of Mississippi now has a piece of legislation on the table that would allow for online poker gaming. The new bill, titled Mississippi Lawful Internet Gaming Act of 2015, was introduced by Representative Bobby Moak and would see the state be able to take part in online poker gaming.
In the bill, it was stated that without regulation of online gambling, the trust and confidence of the public when it comes to legal gaming is impacted. While some may feel this is a great situation to come forward in the state of Mississippi, it does not come without a price. With the new bill, poker sites within the state would be just fine but those that are considered illegal, for example offshore sites, would see those taking part earning jail time.
According to a report at CardPlayer, the new proposal states that poker players who are found to be accessing poker sites located offshore would be facing as much as 90 days in jail and as high as $10,000 in fines. It seems as though offshore sites would be ruled illegal within the state of Mississippi. The state apparently wants to ensure that if anyone is taking part in online gaming within the borders of Mississippi, they are doing so with state regulated sites and not just any operator.
Most laws that have been created around online gambling do not go after the actual customer but the illegal operator for providing their services. Players want to take part in gaming where there are large traffic numbers and the reputation and games are there, not earn jail time for their actions.
The new bill has been introduced into legislation but it does not seem as though the bill will pass this year as little interest has been seen in the state of Mississippi when it comes to online poker gaming. However, you never know what will happen when the government is involved. It will be interesting to see how the bill fares and if it sees any movement within legislator.
