Massachusetts Legislator Considers Online Gambling

massachusettsThe state of Massachusetts continues to work on creating the first resort style casinos in the state, with three venues in the works. Legislators are not only focused on the casino gaming but are reportedly looking ahead to offer online gaming as well. Bruce E. Tarr is the Senate Minority Leader who has stated he would like to authorize the Gaming Commission of the state to approve licensing to existing casinos to have the opportunity to offer online wagering.

Supporters of the proposal by Tarr feel that the option would help the casino industry to gain a larger share of revenues from gambling, creating even more tax revenues for the state. The proposal does not allow for new casino licenses or sanction the state casinos to offer a venue to provide fantasy sports.

The state of Massachusetts it expected to launch three regional casinos as well as a slot parlor over the next few years. This plan would include a resort that is 24 stories located on the Everett waterfront, operated by Steve Wynn, the mogul known for Las Vegas casino gaming.

While there are supporters of Tarr’s proposal, there are also opponents. Some casinos want to be involved in the online gaming industry while others are worried that players would not visit the land based facilities if they have access to the online gaming options.

For now, the legislation proposal is in the early stages. It will be interesting to see if Massachusetts will be able to join Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware to offer online gaming. Several states are in contention to be the next to offer online gaming from Massachusetts to Pennsylvania. 2016 could set up to be a year for big changes to the online gaming marketplace in the United States if these states and more enter the industry.
