For almost two years, the state of New Jersey has offered online poker for residents and visitors to enjoy. Players simply need to be located within the borders of the state to take part, via mobile, computer or laptop. As the industry began, the online poker gaming offerings were not able to meet the estimates provided by studies of the industry. Gaming has continued to earn less than stellar revenues and for 2015, New Jersey continues to see a decrease in revenues for online poker gaming.
The Division of Gaming Enforcement in New Jersey has released the numbers for June earnings and online poker saw yet another decrease. The gaming revenue results show that online poker earned $1.8 million for June, which is a decrease of just over 10% when compared to 2014.
Online poker is hurting, but casino gaming is doing quite well. With the casino gaming options of New Jersey, the state saw an increase of just over 22% on year-over-year with a 14.2% increase when comparing year to date.
In April, New Jersey earned $1.99 million which was less than the $2.6 million from the same month in 2014. In May, decreases continue with only $1.9 million earned which was also lower than the $2.3 million in 2014. With the June earnings going down to $1.8 million, the state has seen a slight decrease each month on a consecutive basis.
It was believed that once the player liquidity sharing began to take place between the WSOP and 888poker, the traffic numbers would grow, resulting in higher revenues. In January of this year, the two groups announced they would share liquidity, and while there has been a small boost in gaming, the revenues are not enough to produce a consistent stream of revenues.
Despite the small decreases in revenues, officials in New Jersey remain happy with their offerings and continue to look at new ways to see continual growth. PokerStars is slated to enter the market at some point in the near future, which can only help the state continue to offer quality online poker gaming, and provide a boost to the industry.
