Across the United States casinos have been fined for breaking rules and regulations. Casinos have had to pay huge fines for allowing underage gambling, underage drinking, allowing self-excluded gamblers on the gaming floor, etc.
Casinos are supposed to be vigilant and make sure that every patron is supposed to be at the casino and that all regulations are followed. However, there are times when someone gets through the system and the casino must pay the price. In New Jersey, an online casino operator has become the first to pay a fine due to a promotional fiasco.
Caesars Entertainment Corp. must now pay $10,000 as part of a fine imposed by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement. The fine was handed down after the gaming operator was found to have sent promotional materials to players who had excluded themselves from game play voluntarily.
The Press of Atlantic City, along with numerous other NJ online gambling sources, reported that this was the first time a legalized online gaming operator has been give this type of fine.
In the state of New Jersey, the self-exclusion list allows players who consider themselves to be compulsive gamblers to place themselves on the list and not be allowed to play online as well as at the actual casino. Online operators, as well as land-based casinos, are not allowed to use promotional materials to solicit these players if their name is on the list.
According to the report, Caesars Interactive sent promotional materials via email from mid-February to the end of May. Over 250 gamblers who had placed themselves on the self-excluded list were sent the promotional materials.
Vice President of Communications for Caesars Interactive, Seth Palansky, stated that the company accepts responsibility for what happened and regrets any harm the incident may have caused. The casino immediately reported the problem to gaming regulators as soon as it was discovered.
Palansky stated that the issue creating the problem in the system has been repaired and no issues have been reported since. Palansky says the incident was a back-end software issue and in no way was the company trying to intentionally target the self-excluded patrons.
